Carl Gerwien Wins Futurity Non-Pro, Brazos Bash Concludes

Carl Gerwien piloted WS Catty Lil Taz (Pepto Taz x Cat Affair x High Brow Cat), bred by Willow Spring Ranch, to a win in the Futurity Non-Pro with a 215 to earn a total of $7,252. Equi-Stat Elite $1 million Rider Gerwien and WS Catty Lil Taz debuted in Amarillo, Texas, in Augus, and Gerwien said he is happy with the improvements they've made.
Reserve Champion Don Bell rode Rosie Mate (Smart Mate x Fancy Toodie Hickory x Doc's Hickory) to mark a 213 and earn a check for $6,044.

The Brazos Bash limited-age cutting concluded Saturday, Oct. 1 and Sunday, Oct. 2 in Weatherford, Texas, with finals in all Non-Pro and Amateur divsionsFuturity Non-Pro. Here are the other highlights.

Derby Non-Pro

Oh Miss Peacock (High Brow Cat x Oh Cay Shorty x Shorty Lena) carried owner and breeder Patrick Collins to mark a 222 and win the Derby Non-Pro. Oh Miss Peacock began her cutting career at the 2010 NCHA Futurity, where she brought home over $14,000 in earnings. With this win, her lifetime earnings are nearing $50,000, according to Equi-Stat.

Carl Gerwien showed his stuff again in the Derby Non-Pro to win Reserve on Mia Smart Quejana (Quejanaisalena x Tiner Bell Hickory x Doc's Hickory) and take home $15,500 in prize money.

Classic Non-Pro

Limited rider Jill Piggott was feeling smooth after her 2006 gelding Talk N Smooth (Smooth As A Cat x Whispering Acres x Bob Acre Doc) bested the field, marking a 219 in the Classic Non-Pro finals. Picking up a check for $20,000, Piggott's lifetime earnings are nearing $80,000.

There was tie for Reserve in the Classic Non-Pro with two riders scoring 217. First in the draw, William Lacy on Montanas Cougar (High Brow Cougar x Montana Docs Queen x Montana Doc) set a high standard early, which was matched by draw 10, Allie Roger on Billy Joe Rey (Dual Rey x Hug Me Darling x Hug Me Doc).

Derby Amateur $50K

Filipe Barbosa and Miss T Rachet (Cat T Masterson x Missys Rachet x Doc's Hickory) marked a 219 in the Derby Amateur to win the class and a check for $4,000. Barbosa recently purchased the mare and has earned over $20,000 with her.

Reserve Champions Sheri Matthews and Smartish (Smart Little Lena x Shortish x Shorty Lena), owned and bred by Matthews Cutting Horses LLC, Weatherford, Texas, scored a 216 in the Derby Amateur.

Classic Amateur $50K

Cristy Erickson rode Karma Kat (High Brow Cat x Bueno Chex Dually x Dual Pep), owned by Sweet Blessings Ranch, LLC and bred by Silver Lining Ranch, to a $4,000 payout in the Classic Amateur $50K. The team encountered many difficulties with injuries in the past, causing them to miss Karma Kat's 4-year-old year completely, so Erickson said she is proud to watch her mare succeed now.

Little Dab A Doo (Abrakadabracre x Lucky Sugar Hickory x Count Hickory) carried owner and breeder Judy Manor to a Reserve title with a score of 213 in the Classic Amateur $50K.
